Most businesses choose a logo design agency by looking at portfolios. That is the wrong first filter. Portfolios are the easiest thing to fake, buy, or inherit from a subcontractor, and a beautiful portfolio tells you nothing about whether you will own the artwork when the project ends.
This guide covers what actually separates a professional logo design agency from a reseller: what gets delivered, who does the work, and what you legally own afterward.
What is a professional logo design agency?
A professional logo design agency is a firm that runs logo projects as strategic engagements rather than file transactions. The defining markers are a named designer assigned to the work, a documented discovery phase, vector deliverables across multiple lockups, and a written transfer of intellectual property rights to the client.
That last item is the sharpest line in the industry. A large share of firms marketing themselves as a logo design agency are order brokers who route briefs to rotating freelance pools, and those firms frequently cannot transfer clean rights because they never held them.
How do you tell an agency from a reseller?
Ask who is doing the work and get a name. A professional logo design agency will tell you which designer is assigned and let you speak to them directly. A reseller will route you through an account manager and decline to identify the designer.
Four other tells:
- Turnaround promises that are too fast. A 24-hour custom logo is a template with your name set in it. Real discovery plus concepts plus refinement runs one to three weeks.
- Concept counts as the headline offer. “50 concepts” signals volume production, not strategy. A designer with a point of view presents three or four directions they can defend.
- No questions before the quote. An agency that prices your brand without asking about your customers or competitors is pricing a commodity.
- Vague file lists. “All files included” is not a deliverable list. Ask for it in writing, format by format.
What should a professional logo design agency deliver?
A complete engagement delivers editable vector source files, every lockup arrangement, single-color versions, web and print exports, written brand guidelines, and a signed copyright assignment.
Here is the checklist to hold any agency against:
| Deliverable | Why it matters |
| AI, EPS, SVG source files | Sign fabricators, embroiderers, and engravers cannot use a PNG |
| Horizontal, stacked, icon-only lockups | One arrangement will not fit a site header, an app icon, and a billboard |
| Single-color versions | Required for embroidery, engraving, and stamps |
| Brand guidelines | HEX, RGB, CMYK, and Pantone codes so screen and print match |
| Signed copyright assignment | What lets you file a trademark and prove ownership later |
If an agency hesitates on the last row, stop the conversation. Without a written assignment you are licensing your own logo.
Agency, freelancer, or AI generator?
Each fits a different situation, and pretending otherwise wastes your money.
A freelancer works when you have a clear brief, a single deliverable, and someone internally who can direct design. You get lower cost and direct access, with capacity risk if they take on other work mid-project.
An AI generator works for placeholder marks, internal projects, and testing directions before you commit. The constraint is legal rather than aesthetic: the US Copyright Office has established that purely AI-generated content cannot be copyrighted, and copyrightability of AI-assisted work depends on the level of human creative authorship involved. You can usually still register such a logo as a trademark, since the USPTO evaluates whether a mark identifies a source rather than who made it. But with no copyright, nothing stops someone reproducing the exact artwork outside your trademark class.
A professional logo design agency works when the mark has to survive scale: multiple locations, licensing, packaging, franchise use, or an eventual trademark filing. You are paying for strategy, a documented rights chain, and a system rather than a single image.
General legal principles only, not legal advice. Consult a trademark attorney before filing.
What questions should you ask before signing?
Ask these five, and get the answers in writing:
- Which designer is assigned to this project, and can I speak with them?
- What is the complete file list I receive on delivery, format by format?
- Do I receive a signed copyright assignment, and can I see the template?
- How many concept directions, and how are revisions handled after I choose one?
- Do you run a clearance check against existing marks in my industry?
The fifth question filters hardest. Most firms skip clearance entirely, which is how businesses end up with a mark that collides with a competitor’s during trademark examination.
Where Professional Logo Design fits
Professional Logo Design operates as a designer-led agency for US businesses. Named designer on every project, direct client-to-designer communication, competitor review during discovery, and a signed copyright assignment as standard. Full file package with every lockup and format on delivery. Typical turnaround is 7 to 14 business days, with calls scheduled in the client’s time zone.
We work with clients across all 50 states, including real estate, food and beverage, home services, healthcare, legal and financial services, and the skilled trades.
